Company History

The parish in which Trinity Church abides was founded in 1794. The first worship services were held in private homes until 1831 when a church was built and a permanent rector was called. By 1865, the congregation outgrew its traditional New England style clapboard building and the current stone edifice, which was designed by the first bishop of Vermont, John Henry Hopkins, was built.
By the late 1800s, a large men and boys choir had been established. Until WWII, the young boys were paid for their singing provided they attended all rehearsals and worship services for the week. They also had to keep their school grades at a B+ or better level to participate. You can understand how this was a great motivator during the Great Depression!
In 1921, Trinity purchased and installed its grand Aeolian Skinner pipe organ in the main church. After a major restoration and rebuilding campaign in the early 2000s, the Skinner organ now included three manuals and over 3500 pipes in both the choir and gallery. A smaller pipe organ was installed in the chapel in 1974.
Trinity Church has been blessed with some very fine music directors over the years including Charles V. H. Coan who founded the Trinity Church choir; Mrs. Lola Kenney, during whose tenure the Trinity Church Boys Choir grew to to national prominence and who was instrumental in welcoming women into the adult choir; Dr. Robert English, a renowned organist; Mrs. Betty Clark who studied under the tutelage of world-famous organist Helmut Walcha; and most recently Dr. James. P. Cassarino who provided landmark resources on Welsh-American choral music.
