Stevenson High School is a five-time recipient of the U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award and recently received recognition from the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts as a National School of Distinction for Arts Education. Also among the music department’s accolades is being named one of the nation’s “12 Model Music Programs” by the National Association for Music Education (MENC).

The Music Department’s strength derives from the collaboration between its band, choir, strings, and general music faculty, and from its commitment to a proven model of a Professional Learning Community.

The Stevenson Choral program has over 140 students active in three full-credit choir classes. The ensembles have a long tradition of quality and maintain a high profile within the school community. The curriculum philosophy includes an emphasis on performance and comprehensive musicianship in all ensemble classes. Students in the choir program also have the opportunity to participate in three co-curricular a cappella groups and in the fall musical.

Stevenson has two choir directors who share conducting responsibilities in a team-teaching arrangement across three curricular choir classes. Both directors are assigned to each of the three choir classes and share other duties including teaching general music classes (Arts Survey, AP Music Theory, Guitar, Music Production, and Piano). The Choir directors receive an additional stipend for after-school responsibilities, as well as sponsoring some co-curricular activities.

Responsibilities could include but may not be limited to:
Planning concert cycles and repertoire;
Teaching ensembles, sectionals, and planning assessment activities focused on individual feedback;
Organizing enriching experiences (Field Trips, Travel, Clinicians);
Facilitates Choir team meetings;
Communicating with parents, community, and sender schools;
Overseeing the well-being and growth of the program

Artistry and finesse with conducting ability;
Functional rehearsal piano skills;
Proficient with technologies related to music, record-keeping, and communication

Qualified applicants must hold a valid Illinois Professional Educator's Teaching License (PEL) with secondary Music endorsement. Exceptional candidates have teaching experience in high school Music.
