Description
ORGANIST AND PIANIST/ACCOMPANIST First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs is seeking a part-time organist and pianist for our 9 am and 11 am traditional services, beginning in January 4, 2026. Our Sanctuary instruments are a M.P. Moller Opus 10845 pipe organ and a 9’ Steinway Concert Grand.
Primary duties include:
Play piano and organ for the 9 and 11am traditional services;
Provide liturgically-appropriate preludes and postludes weekly and communion music (once a month).
Service music (Gloria Patri, Doxology, etc…)
Accompany the Chancel Choir and other occasional special music (soloists, ensembles, instrumentalists.
Play for Special Services throughout the church year, i.e., Ash Wednesday, Holy Week Services, Christmas Eve.
Play for Choir Rehearsal on Wednesday nights from 6-7:30 pm and occasional Saturday dress rehearsals throughout the year (i.e. cantata dress rehearsals with orchestra. Easter and Christmas rehearsals with instrumentalists and Choral Retreats twice yearly)
Support other programs in the life of the church that occasionally require music, such as the Ordination service for Annual Conference, or graduation/completion of other ministry programs.
Play for funerals/memorial services, if available.
Requirements
The ideal candidate:
Will possess at least a bachelor degree in music.
Is comfortable playing both piano and organ in a range of musical styles.
Has experience playing for traditional worship services.
Is familiar with the liturgical church year and is able to choose appropriate music to connect with liturgical and seasonal worship themes and sermon series.
Creatively energizes congregational hymn singing during worship.
Works well with others and has clear communication skills.
Has strong sight-reading abilities, moderately-advanced technical skills, is comfortable working with a conductor, collaborating with a choir, vocal/instrumental soloists, and playing in an ensemble setting (chamber orchestra, brass quintet, etc…).
