Description
General Overview: Shallowford is home to a vibrant music ministry with a strong legacy of excellent music for all ages. The Director of Music Ministries is responsible for leading the Chancel (adult) and Chapel (youth) Choirs and overseeing a comprehensive ministry of music which encourages, models, and leads the church’s worship of God.
Status: Full Time (FT), Exempt
Supervisor: Senior Pastor/Head of Staff
Supervises: Associate Director of Music & Organist (FT), Director of Children’s Choirs (PT), Administrative Assistant for Music (PT), and any guest musicians
Salary Range: $75k+ commensurate with experience
Hours: Sunday mornings and evenings, Thursday evenings, and flexible weekday office hours. Fridays and Saturdays are ordinarily scheduled days off.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Lead, recruit, and conduct the adult Chancel Choir in weekly rehearsals, worship, and special programs (e.g. Christmas concert)
- Lead, recruit and conduct the youth Chapel Choir (6th-12th grade) in weekly rehearsals, worship, special programs (e.g. Christmas concert), fundraisers, and a summer choir tour
- Collaborate with the pastoral staff on year-round worship planning, including selection of theologically appropriate hymns and musical offerings for weekly worship, funerals, and special events. This includes arranging for choirs, bells, soloists, and guest musicians as needed.
- Provide musical oversight for all worship services and special music programs, including concerts, weddings, and funerals
- Lead and coordinate volunteer and professional instrumentalists for worship and special music programs
- Provide strategic direction to the Music Ministry
- Supervise Music Ministry Staff and exercise a collaborative leadership style
- Procure and prepare guest musicians and paid singers as needed
- Oversee the care of the music library and all musical instruments and equipment
- Lead and be responsible for additional ministry opportunities as needed
Other Responsibilities:
- Develop and manage the music budget, and collaborate with the senior pastor on the worship budget
- Recruit, train, and collaborate with youth music ministry volunteers for weekly rehearsals, youth choir trips, and special events (e.g. lock ins, fundraisers).
- Serve on the Worship Committee as a staff liaison and support their work
- Maintain accurate rosters of chapel and chancel choirs, and help music ministry outreach to serve as an avenue to church membership
- Collaborate with the pastors on caring for members who in need of pastoral support
- Foster community in the ministry of music and seek to support the church’s mission
- Promote and represent Shallowford’s music ministry to the community at large
- Coordinate with Youth Ministry staff in planning events
- Attend weekly staff meetings, monthly Session meetings, and quarterly worship committee meetings
Requirements
Knowledge and Skills Desired:
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in related field
- Graduate degree or equivalent experience in music ministry preferred
- Experience:
- Five years of experience in choral and orchestral conducting required, preferably in a church setting
- Five years of experience with youth choirs preferred
- Supervisory experience preferred
- Skills:
- Vocal training and keyboard skills preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent collaboration and relationship-building skills
- Demonstrated proficiency in computer skills
- Committed to personal and professional development
- Knowledge of choral literature and relevant major works
