Description
Now celebrating its thirty-eighth season, the Blair Concert Chorale (BCC) is seeking an experienced and innovative Artistic Director with a proven record of achievement as a choral conductor to lead this critically acclaimed auditioned adult chorus of over 40 members.
The successful candidate will conduct the Blair Concert Chorale in weekly rehearsals and in at least three performances each season; provide artistic and administrative leadership; select repertoire serving pedagogical needs of both audience and the BCC as a whole; and collaborate on possible performance projects with other area music organizations. The successful candidate will show evidence of significant artistic, interpersonal and communication skills.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct weekly rehearsals on Monday evenings
- Oversee the artistic growth, education and vocal health of the BCC members in accordance with the established mission statement and operating budget
- Program and execute musical performances of quality vocal literature.
- Establish a marketable, balanced artistic season to be presented for Board approval by May 1 annually
- Audition existing and potential chorale members
- Contact soloist and instrumental musicians when required
- Work within the established budget with due diligence toward fiscal responsibility
- The BCC Artistic Director must maintain the highest ethical and aesthetic standard to maintain the Chorale’s community prominence and artistic integrity
Education and Experience Requirements
- Minimum of three years choral conducting experience and artistic oversight
- Expertise in vocal pedagogy, languages and choral diction
- Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in choral conducting, music education or related degree program. Master’s (preferred)
- Demonstrated experience in selecting advanced level concert repertoire
- Ability to artistically interpret and annotate master scores for chorus, accompanists, instrumentalists and soloists
- The successful candidate will demonstrate effective rehearsal techniques, knowledge of the voice, and appropriate repertoire selection.
- In addition, the candidate will provide evidence of excellence in artistic achievement and ability to build upon the organization’s reputation.
Salary and Job Location
- Salary is commensurate with experience, education and services rendered and negotiable
- Position is headquartered in Altoona, PA
- Position reports to BCC Board of Directors
- Contracted annually

- Video sample of rehearsal (front view of conductor) and/or performances that demonstrate two styles of conducting
- List of choral repertoires performed in last two years
- Two programs from past choral performances within the past three years (printed or electronically transmitted)

- Interview via phone or electronically with the BCC Conductor Search Committee
- Complete an in person rehearsing audition with the BCC for designated finalists
